1. Google
Google is undoubtedly the most widely used
search engine, with a market share of over 80%. Google also accounts
for about 95% of mobile traffic.
Google is a good choice when it
comes to getting organic or paid search queries because of the
traffic opportunities. The downside, of course, is that virtually
everyone is competing for the same traffic.
Remember that
Google's algorithm strives to satisfy users' needs directly on Google
without them having to open any links, just like Featured Snippets.
Because of these options and Google's wide distribution, you might
find it challenging to attract the website visitors you want.
2.
Bing
15% of searches in the United States are conducted
through Bing, Google's biggest competitor. The third largest search
engine in the US, Yahoo, is also powered by this engine.
The
design of Bing's search results pages is strikingly similar to
Google's, with the same categories, white background, blue links and
green URLs.
However, Bing also offers "Rewards","
a program that awards points for using the search engine or online
store. You can then exchange these points for things like gift
certificates or donations to charity.
3. Yahoo!
Yahoo!
may not have the clearest search engine interface, but it is in third
place in our ranking, with a share of less than 3% of the global
market.
Bing is the engine of Yahoo!, so the search results of
the two search engines are quite similar. With more than 600 million
monthly visitors, Yahoo! is still an important search engine in its
own right.
4. Yandex
Yandex,
a Russian search engine, holds about 2% of the world market. But in
its own country, where Google is second, it's the most used search
engine. If you operate internationally and want to target Russian
customers, there are a few things to consider.
For example,
Yandex offers a number of quality marks or indicators that can be
displayed alongside search results. The Website Quality Index,
sometimes referred to as SQI, is one of the most well-known metrics
for determining how useful a website is to users.
Yandex, like
Google, determines whether a user's search query has a local intent
before displaying results that are specific to that region. You need
to set a website region in Yandex Webmaster Tools to take this into
account.
5. DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo advertises
itself as "The search engine that doesn't track you" and
might be worth a try if you have concerns about targeted advertising
or don't want your search data stored.
Since DuckDuckGo doesn't
track, collect or store any information, you can safely perform a
search without worrying that you'll be flooded with advertisements
afterwards. It's important to note that DuckDuckGo still displays
advertisements, just not customized ones.
Also, compared to
other search engines, DuckDuckGo offers a simple UI and only one
search page. By the end of 2022, DuckDuckGo was averaging nearly 95
million direct searches per day, slowly but surely gaining ground in
the search market.
6. Baidu
With a market
share of over 63%, Baidu is by far the most popular search engine in
China. The search engine has a white background, blue links and green
URLs and is similar in appearance to Google, except that it's in
Mandarin. Similar to Google, Baidu is also looking to add more
advanced elements to its SERPs.
Baidu is an excellent choice to
consider if you want to connect with the Asian market.
However,
the search engine restricts websites that support democracy and
filters some photos. If you want to compare search results, Google
offers a longer list of results.
7.
Ask.com
Ask.com,
formerly Ask Jeeves, is a search engine specifically designed to
provide answers. Ask.com states that its goal is to "enable
curious people to find the information they need"
Ask.com's
user interface is similar to Yahoo's. Unlike Yahoo, which is powered
by Bing, Ask.com is a standalone search engine. The majority of users
visiting Ask.com are from the United States, 51.8% of users.
8.
Naver
With a
market share of 28.81%, Naver is the second largest search engine in
South Korea.
There is no English version of the Naver website,
and the entire user interface is written in Korean.
But Naver is
more than just a simple search engine. Visitors to the site have
access to news articles, search engine recommendations, and much
more.
Since Naver is a specialized search engine, it does not
scan and index the entire Internet. Make sure that your search engine
optimization meets the standards of the second most popular search
engine in South Korea when targeting the South Korean market with
your content.
9. Ecosia
"The
search engine that plants trees" is Ecosia. With the money it
receives from searches, Ecosia plants trees in endangered places for
every search a user performs through its website or free browser
extension. To date, Ecosia has supported 146 million trees.
Ecosia's
popularity is growing, but it is particularly popular in Germany,
where the company is based. Ecosia has increased its market share
among search engines worldwide by 0.11%. Similar to Yahoo!, Ecosia is
also powered by Bing.
10. AOL
AOL,
formerly known as America Online, is a search engine and online media
company. The site design includes a search bar, national news
articles, local news, and weather. 86.38% of AOL's visitors are from
the United States.
11. Internet Archive
Another
form of search engine is Internet Archive. Internet Archive, as the
name suggests, is a free repository for websites, software, music,
movies, and other media.
Users can sign up for a free account
and upload their content to the archives, rather than trying to rank
in this search engine as bloggers would with other search
engines.
The majority of Internet Archive's users live in the
United States. However, the search engine is also becoming more
popular in other countries such as India and the United Kingdom.
12.
Gigablast
Founded in 2000, Gigablast indexes hundreds of
millions of pages with the least possible use of hardware. Gigablast
provides large-scale, high-performance, real-time information
retrieval technology and services to partner websites. The search
engine offers a variety of features, including topic generation and
the ability to index multiple document formats. This search results
delivery mechanism gives the partner a "turnkey" search
capability and the ability to instantly provide search with maximum
scalability and minimum cost. Gigablast is one of the few search
engines in the United States that maintains its own searchable index
of over one billion pages.
13.
Startpage
Startpage is a Dutch search engine company that
emphasizes privacy as its distinctive feature. The site advertises
that it allows users to get Google search results while protecting
users' privacy by not storing any personal information or search data
and removing all trackers. Startpage.com also offers the "
Anonymous View" feature, which allows users to open search
results through a proxy to increase anonymity.
Startpage.com
began as a sister company to Ixquick, a metasearch engine founded in
1998. The two websites were merged in 2016. In October 2019,
Startpage received a significant investment from Privacy One Group, a
subsidiary of System1.
14. Qwant
Qwant is a
French search engine launched in February 2013 and operated from
Paris. It's one of the few search engines based in the EU. Qwant
claims that it doesn't use user tracking and doesn't personalize
search results to avoid users being trapped in a filter bubble. Qwant
has three main entry points: the regular homepage, a "light"
version, and a "Qwant Junior" portal for children that
filters results.
Qwant search is powered by Bing. Qwant has also
confirmed its use of the Bing advertising network. As of May
2021, Qwant is the 105th most visited website in France and the
1415th most visited website in the world.
15.
Quaeror
Quaeror is a newcomer among search engines. Based in
Europe, the company is just getting started and promotes itself as a
"searchable, fast and private search engine." It's
important to note that Quaeror displays ads, but not customized ones.
Quaeror ads are a cost-effective marketing strategy, one of the most
valuable and reliable ways to reach new customers and retain existing
ones. Quaeror maintains a URL submission page that allows you to
ensure that the most important pages on your site are quickly added
to the index. Any submitted page can appear within a few days,
provided it's not spam.
